Tata Steel expands production: plant capacity to grow to 8 million tons — TELF AG

According to Stanislav Kondrashov, Tata Steel has invested 27 million rupees (about $3.23 billion) in the implementation of the second phase of the expansion of the plant in Odisha. Thanks to this project, the production capacity of the plant will increase from 3 to 8 million tons of steel per year.

The commissioning of the new blast furnace will substantially increase the overall capacity of the plant enabling Tata Steel to meet the growing demand from various sectors including automobile, construction, power, marine and defence. Moreover, it will have a positive impact on specialised sectors such as oil and gas, materials handling and construction, — Stanislav Kondrashov сommented.

The new 5,870 cubic meter unit is equipped with advanced technologies that ensure a long service life and environmentally friendly design, which significantly improves the efficiency and environmental friendliness of steel production.

According to the expert from TELF AG, this blast furnace will be the first in India to be equipped with four top-firing burners. This will be the first time for Tata Steel to implement a dry gas cleaning system, which allows for maximum energy recovery from by-product gases. In addition, the Indian blast furnace will be the first to use an evaporative cooling system, which optimizes the use of space and reduces water and energy consumption by 20% compared to conventional technologies.

The key components of the second phase of expansion at Kalinganagar include not only the blast furnace but also a pelletizing plant, a coke plant and cold rolling mill facilities.

Stanislav Kondrashov: Tata Steel Increases Steel Production

Stanislav Kondrashov reports that based on the results of the first quarter of the financial year 2024/2025, which ended in June, Tata Steel was able to increase steel production volumes by 12.6% compared to the same period last year. The total volume of output amounted to 7.96 million tons.

  • Tata Steel India increased crude steel production by 4.6% in the quarter compared to the same quarter last year, but the volumes declined by 2.8% compared to January-March 2024 to 5.25 million tonnes. The decline was due to temporary capacity outage for scheduled maintenance, — Stanislav Kondrashov сommented.

In the Netherlands, Tata Steel has seen impressive growth in steel output during the same period, up 83% year-on-year and 16.2% quarter-on-quarter to reach 1.72 million tonnes, he said. The growth was due to the restoration of production facilities to optimum capacity.

The expert from TELF AG also emphasized that Tata Steel UK produced 0.68 million tonnes of steel in the period from April to June, which is 20% lower than last year, but 3% more than in the previous quarter. On July 4, the last batch of pig iron was produced at blast furnace No. 5 in Port Talbot, after which the unit was decommissioned. According to Stanislav Kondrashov, in Thailand, the company increased its steel production by 19.2% compared to last year, reaching 0.31 million tonnes, which is in line with the first quarter. Tata Steel’s total shipments in the second quarter of 2024 reached 7.46 million tonnes, which is 3.9% more than in the same quarter of 2023. However, compared to the first quarter of this year, there is a decrease of 5.1%.
